| Kandy :
Situated 500 meters above sea level was the last
capital city of the Sri Lankan Kings, until the year 1815 when
the British took control of the Island. Kandy was considered to
be the most beautiful city of the country.
Today it has a population of nearly 200,000. We call them Kandyan's
none of the other citizens in Sri Lanka are called by the name
of his town. They are proud because they belong to the last kingdom
and the place where new history began with the British invasion.
Today a visit to Kandy will take you to the heart of the city,
which is the Temple of the Tooth relic, Fresh fruits, the vegetable
market, and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens which is About 11
km from the city center is one of the most beautiful botanical
gardens in Asia. Every evening there is a special cultural show,
where a visitor could enjoy the traditional dances of the country.
The main Esala festival, Asia's grandest traditional pageant, takes
place in the months Of July, August. It winds its way through the
streets for ten nights by the moon and torch light. It is held
annually in honour to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha and
to obtain blessings.
Do not forget to make a half day Excursion to see the unique Elephant
orphanage in Pinnawala, where you can see the bathing and feeding
of baby elephants.
Also you can visit the surrounding historical temples namely, Gadaladeniya,
Embekka and Lankathilaka.
